Clara (Syre) Ford was born in Newport News, VA, and raised nomadically around the United States. Ford is a multidisciplinary artist whose artworks and projects are developed from a place of selfhood and from a sense of honoring the black and brown communities that nurtured them. “My work explores the layers of self that exist beneath surface memory — the quiet, tangled places where emotion, memory, and intuition meet. Through my art, I document what rises from my subconscious: fragments of dreams, flashes of childhood, or unspoken feelings that linger in the body. Each piece becomes both an excavation and a reflection — a way to listen to myself more deeply.
As a Black, queer artist, this process feels like both healing and reclamation. In this way, my practice is a form of self-discovery and connection, revealing that what lies beneath me often echoes in others. By honoring my inner world, I hope to affirm that our hidden selves are rich sources of wisdom, love, and collective understanding.”
